How to Build a Patio Storage Box

Cut sixteen pieces of wood to the desired length using a miter saw. You will need to create four rectangular frames, each composed of four pieces of wood for a total of sixteen boards. To create a box that is 6 feet by 3 feet by 3 feet, cut four pieces of wood that are six feet in length. Cut the remaining pieces into 3 foot segments.

Use a pocket-hole jig to cut pocket holes in the ends of all the pieces that make up the sides of the box. For each frame, there should be two boards on each side with pocket holes.

Spread wood glue on all the surfaces that will meet and use pocket screws to attach each frame together. You should now have the four sides of your box.

Drill the four sides of the box together to complete the frame. Keep the pieces with the pocket screws on the outside because they will be covered by cladding.

Cut two lengths of wood that will act as cleats underneath the box and hold the bottom slats in place. Cut them to 6 feet and drill them along both sides at the bottom of your frame.

Cut enough 3 foot long slats to cover the bottom of your box. Insert them on top of the cleat---they will sit in place or you can drill them into the cleats for more support.

Cut enough 3 foot pieces of cladding to cover the exterior of your box. Attach them in place by applying a thin strip of carpenter's glue and then attaching them with a nail gun. Cover the entire exterior of the box with cladding pieces.

Cut a sheet of wood that is one in larger than the base of the box on all sides. This will serve as the top of your box. Place this sheet on top of your box and attach two hinges on the back of the box to hold the top to the frame of the box.

Lift the lid by the front lip to access the contents of your box.
