How to Make Garden Furniture

You can make a wooden bench for the garden from lumber leftover from other projects or wood found at the local home improvement center. It is light enough for you to easily move it around the garden space as it provides style and function. This bench can also be a table but for that the builder may consider using a solid piece of wood for the top instead of planks. Remember that this bench will need to have some form of a finish applied to the surface to protect it from the elements.

Instructions

    • 1

Put goggles on and set up circular saw. Measure and mark the wood into four 32-inch pieces (legs), six 4-foot pieces (seat), two 44-inch pieces (long brackets), and two 16-inch pieces (short brackets). Cut the wood at the marks.

    • 2

Cut and sand the areas with 80-grit sandpaper.

    • 3

Assemble the drill and predrill a hole at a 20 degree angle on each end of the 16-inch pieces.

    • 4

Place one of the 32-inch pieces vertically on a flat surface. Put one of the 16-inch pieces horizontally against the side and predrill a hole in the side at a 20 degree angle. Repeat with the other 16-inch pieces. Run a bead of glue along the edge of each 16-inch piece and secure to the legs with a 2-inch #10 wood screw.

    • 5

Apply a wood clamp to each assembled side piece and secure. Let the piece dry for 24 hours.

    • 6

Remove clamps and drill a hole at a 20 degree angle in each end of the 44 inch pieces. Apply a layer of wood glue to the end of each cross piece and attach to the side pieces with 2 inch #10 wood screws. Apply wood clamps and let set for 24 hours to completely dry.

    • 7

Remove wood clamps and predrill each end of the 4-foot long pieces. Attach each seat piece to the seat with 2-inch #10 wood screws.

    • 8

Sand the whole piece with 240 grit sandpaper. Apply finish as desired. Let dry and top with a coat of varnish.
