Application Instructions for Teak Oil

Teak oil is a good protectant of dense wood such as teak. It can be used on other woods as well. Teak oil soaks into the pores of wood, protecting it from water and the harmful rays of the sun. Teak oil helps prevent wood from drying out. It's commonly used to protect wooden outdoor furniture. Teak oil is easy to apply; it doesn't take any special tools or skills.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on the respirator, safety goggles and work gloves if you need to remove any existing paint or varnish on the surface. Scrape or sand off any wax, grease and dirt, too.

    • 2

Shake the teak oil container gently for 15 to 20 seconds to get it ready to apply.

    • 3

Apply a thick coat of teak oil to the wood surface with a paint brush or a balled-up rag. Pour some oil into a container and dip the brush in. Or pour some oil on a rag and apply it to the surface.

    • 4

Let the teak oil soak into the wood surface for five to 10 minutes. Apply a second coat of teak oil onto the surface and allow it to set for 15 to 20 minutes.

    • 5

Wipe the wood surface with rags until the excess teak oil is removed and it's dry. Wait six to eight hours longer before you use the piece.

    • 6

Clean the paintbrush and any teak oil spills with mineral spirits or paint thinner.
