How to Transfer a Canopy to Wood

Canopies are draped over outdoor gazebos, wooden latticework and garden swings to provide light shade and protection from falling leaves or other debris. They are usually made of thin canvas or synthetic mesh material. Because of their light weight, most canopies are easily removed or installed. If you wish to remove an existing canopy from a metal or sturdy plastic frame and transfer it to a wooden fixture, all you'll need is a sunny afternoon and a few household tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Set up your ladder at the base of the frame you wish to remove the canopy from. Climb to an appropriate height with your electric screwdriver in hand.

    • 2

Remove the canopy's screws from the mounting eyelets using the screwdriver in its reverse setting. If the canopy is very long or wide, you may need to reposition your ladder several times.

    • 3

Lift the canopy off of its current frame once all screws have been removed.

    • 4

Wash the canopy of any dirt, bird droppings or debris using a garden hose and scrub brush. Allow it to air dry for one to two hours.

    • 5

Place the canopy over the wooden fixture using the ladder for assistance. Enlist the help of a friend or family member to move the canopy into place.

    • 6

Attach the canopy to the wooden fixture by driving 1 1/2 inch wood screws through the canopy's mounting eyelets. Allow the screw to protrude slightly for a secure fit.
