Turn the basic idea of a rope swing on its head by using just one rope as opposed to two. Choose a wooden swing seat and drill a hole into the center of it. Weave a single measure of thick, sturdy, weatherproof rope through the hole and tie a knot on the underside so that the rope does not slip out of the seat. Fashion a tight loop out of the other end of the rope and connect it to a sturdy tree limb to create a simple rope swing.
Make a classic tree swing by boring two holes through the ends of a rectangular or square piece of pressure-treated lumber. This lumber will form your swing seat. Thread strong nylon or polypropylene rope that's at least 18 mm thick through both holes. Fashion strong knots on the underside of the seat with Manrope stopper knots or another type of knot that you know how to create. Loop rope ends around a tree limb that's strong and allows kids plenty of room to swing.
A simple way to alter a traditional rope swing and make it your, or your child's, own is by using a non-traditional seat style. Most rope swing seats are made from basic rectangular shaped wooden planks. Make yours unique by creating a seat that is a circle, triangle or customized shape. The possibilities are endless and, depending on the shape you choose, can work well with a one- or two-rope swing design.
Another twist on a rope swing project is to tie the rope around the top edge of a tire. Wrap the other end of the rope around a sturdy tree limb. Make sure you select a spot that has at least six feet of open space in all directions. Children can enjoy sitting in the center of the tire and swinging from the tree.
