How to Cover a Lawn Chair Using Fabric & Elastic Straps

Comfortable lawn chairs need just enough "give" to allow you to settle into them without the material cutting into you. Cloth strips and elastic straps work together to create a stable, yet flexible seat. You can update the look in minutes by removing the old fabric strips and weaving your new selections in their place. Create chairs in your favorite team colors or coordinate with the colors in your garden and surrounding landscape.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • Power drill, 1/8-inch diameter bit
  • Elastic straps or bungee cords
  • 5 yards heavy-duty cotton, denim or muslin fabric
  • Grommet setter and grommets

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of the chair frame and divide by three to determine how many holes to drill for your fabric strips. Drill 1/8-inch diameter holes across the back support and front support of the chair frame every 3 inches.

    • 2

Hook one end of each elastic-strap bungee cord in the first hole along the back support of the chair frame. Run the cord under the midrib, which is where the chair folds in half, and hook it over the first hole in the front support. Run the second strap over the midrib before you hook it into place.

    • 3

Continue to alternate the elastic cords over or under the midrib until all holes in the chair have cords running from them.

    • 4

Cut your fabric into 6-inch wide strips, 4 inches longer than the width of the chair. Fold the fabric in half, lengthwise with right sides facing each other. The right side of the fabric is the smoother, more colorful side. Stitch the fabric closed along the open edge, leaving a 1/4-inch seam allowance.

    • 5

Reposition the fabric so the seam is centered. Press the seam open from center to sides. Turn the fabric tube right side out and press it flat with the seam centered on the underside.

    • 6

Fold the ends of each fabric strip into an arrow shape, folding the point back toward the center point of the strip. Set grommets in the arrow-folded ends of the fabric, 1/2-inch from the tips, using a grommet-setter.

    • 7

Cut a hole in the fabric and place the concave side of a washer, which is the bottom grommet, face-up over the spike in the grommet setter. Fit the other half of the grommet through the hole in the fabric and pull the lever to flatten the grommet and washer together.

    • 8

Weave the fabric strips under and over the elastic straps. Attach the ends to the chair frame through the grommets and into the frame, using 1/8-inch diameter machine screws.
