Do-it-Yourself Hammocks

Lazy days spent swinging in the summer sun, beach holidays and exotic locales -- all are evoked by the simplest of seats, the epitome of relaxation: the hammock. While a netted hammock may be beyond the scope of most do-it-youselfers, unless they are whizzes with knots, a DIY fabric hammock is deceptively simple to make. These are so easy to make that you can get a production line happening and hand-create this year's Christmas presents.

  • Sewing machine
  • 50-foot non-stretch rope, 3/8-inch diameter

Instructions

    • 1

Fold a 1/2-inch seam along either side of the long side of cotton fabric 1 1/5 by 3 1/2 yards, then sew the seam together with the sewing machine. Sew a 1/2-inch seam along the shorter sides of the fabric as well. Fold all the seams over again to create a double seam and sew together. This ensures that the cut edges of the fabric are enclosed in the seam and will not fray over time.

    • 2

Fold the short ends of the fabric over into a 2-inch loop, then sew the loops down. Go over the sewing on the loop three times to ensure it is well secured.

    • 3

Cut a 50-foot non-stretch rope in half and thread each half through one of the loops on either end of the hammock.

    • 4

Locate two hardwood trees, or posts that are around 2 to 3 feet farther apart than the length of the hammock. Measure up 5 feet on each tree or post and drill a 1/16-inch pilot hole on both trees or posts.

    • 5

Screw eyebolts into the trees or post using the pilot holes. Screw them in only as far as the eyebolt and don't twists them too tight -- this risks either cracking the tree or post or warping the eyebolt.

    • 6

Attach a snap hook or S-hook to the eyebolts, then thread the rope through each hook. Have your helper stand on the opposite end from you while you both pull the rope until the desired hanging height of the hammock is reached. Tie the rope off at this point very securely to finish your do-it-yourself hammock.
