How to Keep Teeter Totter Seats From Cracking in the Sun

A playground is not complete without a teeter totter. But like any equipment, many teeter totters are sensitive to the elements, especially the sun. The sun, along with rain, can cause the seats and other parts of the teeter tooter to crack and blister. To prevent damage from the sun, there are a few steps you must take to preserve the integrity of the teeter totter.

Things You'll Need

  • Mild detergent
  • Polyurethane sealant
  • Paint brush

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the teeter totter with mild detergent and water. Do not use bleach; it will eat away at rubber and glue, and could contribute to cracks in the equipment.

    • 2

Treat wooden parts of the teeter totter by applying a polyurethane sealant with a paint brush or sponge. Unsealed wood can begin to crack from sun and other elements. Pour a glass of water on the wood parts of the teeter totter to test it. If the water is absorbed into the wood, it needs to be treated. If the water beads and rolls off, there is no need to treat the wood.

    • 3

Place a tarp over the teeter totter when it is not in use. This will protect the seats from sun damage.
