How to Tie a Rope Hammock

Freestanding outdoor rope hammocks can be set up almost anywhere, but you need two trees or posts to tie a rope hammock. An easy and secure way to tie a rope hammock is by using a bowline loop knot on both ends of the hammock. Rope hammocks are lightweight and can be taken along on camping trips due to their easy assembly that does not require tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Find two trees that are close enough to set up the rope hammock. The distance between the two trees depends on the size of the hammock, but typically, they should be about 7 to 10 feet apart. Measure the length of the hammock and add about 3 feet to get the ideal distance. The trees should be at least 12 inches in diameter. Alternatively, a pole can be set up the appropriate distance from a tree or two posts.

    • 2

Set up two posts if trees aren't available and ensure that they can support the weight. Each post should be 6 inches wide; and if they're made of wood, make sure it is treated hardwood, without any cracks or other damage. To set up a more permanent place for your rope hammock, cement each post into the ground. Dig two holes 3 feet deep, insert the posts and fill the holes with a few inches of pea gravel. Mix up a batch of concrete and pour it in to secure each post. Let the posts sit for a few days to allow the concrete to properly cure prior to tying the rope hammock.

    • 3

Tie a heavy, strong rope at each end of the hammock. Stretch the hammock prior to hanging it. String the hammock between the trees or posts so it sits 4 to 6 feet off the ground.

    • 4

Tie the hammock with a bowline loop. Start at one end of the rope hammock and make a small loop. Pull the short end of the rope up through the small loop. Next, pull the same end behind the piece of rope facing up from the loop then pull it back down through the loop. Pull it tight to secure the knot.

    • 5

Wrap the other end of the rope twice around the tree or post prior to threading it back through the bowline loop. Repeat the same knot on the other side of the rope hammock.

Ensure that each knot is tied tight enough so it will not slip down the posts or trees. The tighter the rope knot, the less likely it is to slip.
