How to Make a Hammock With Curtains

Many people like to recycle one item to make something new. Making a hammock is a good way to use up old and outdated curtains that you no longer hang at the windows of your home. By adding a few grommets to your curtains, and hanging them on a tree, you change them into a comfortable hammock for you to enjoy on a summer afternoon in your yard. Hang your curtain hammock in the shade.

Instructions

Take your two curtains and place them with right sides together. Arrange them so the top of one curtain is at the bottom of the other curtain. This will give you added strength for the grommets as the curtain header is normally at least two layers of fabric.

    • 2

Pin down the length of the curtains at the sides. Use the sewing machine to stitch down the sides, removing the pins as you sew.

    • 3

Turn the curtains right side out. Top stitch at the top and bottom of the hammock so as to secure them together. Top stitch along the sides as well to give added strength to the seams.

    • 4

Read the directions to your grommet kit, as the directions may vary from brand to brand.

    • 5

Measure out along the top and bottom ends of the curtain for grommet placement. Evenly space the grommets about 1 inch from the edge of the curtain. Use six grommets per side. Install the grommets using the rubber mallet as per the manufacturer's directions.

Cut 12 lengths of the hammock cord measuring approximately 30 inches. Knot one end of each length of cord. Thread the other end of the cord through the gauge stick. Tie the ends of the cord to the hammock ring.

Attach the hooks to the tree or pole where you want to place the hammock. Loop the rings onto the hooks to hang the hammock.
