How to Hang a Hammock in Your Back Yard

A hammock in your back yard makes the difference between having both feet on the ground and swinging in the breeze. It doesn't take long to set up a hammock between two sturdy trees. Hammocks typically come with an installation kit that supplies screws and hooks for hanging. You can choose how taut you want your hammock based on personal preference, keeping in mind that hammocks tend to loosen with usage. Turn your back yard into an oasis with a hammock, and enjoy the relaxation it provides.

Instructions

    • 1

Spread your hammock out flat. Measure the length of your hammock from hanging point to hanging point. Divide the total hanging distance by 3. Multiply the answer by 2 to find 2/3 of the hanging distance. This 2/3 measurement is the minimum distance required between hammock hanging points. You can extend the distance for a more taut fit.

    • 2

Find a place in your back yard to hang the hammock. Consider hanging distance and the purpose of your hammock, such as sunbathing versus relaxing in the shade. Choose two hardwood trees such as oaks, sycamores, maples and aspens that are at least 12 inches in diameter and within the hammock hanging distance measurement.

    • 3

Measure 6 to 8 feet from the ground up on each tree trunk, and mark an “X” on each tree with chalk or tape to designate where to drill holes.

    • 4

Drill a pilot hole that is half the diameter of the screw of the hammock hook into each tree at the “X” marking. Screw the hammock hooks into the pilot holes so that the eye of the screw is against the tree.

    • 5

Attach S-hooks to the rings on each end of the hammock. Connect the S-hooks to the eyes of the screws that you installed in the trees.
