Painting Outdoor Wood & Bamboo Furniture

Over time, outdoor furniture can take a beating. Use, sun, wind and rain can fade or chip paint and finish off metal and bamboo furniture, leaving them looking old and ragged. Rather than spending money on a whole new set of outdoor furnishing, you can spend an afternoon giving your current pieces a face-lift. Even home improvement novices can remove old furniture paint and apply a fresh coat. Spray paints are easiest to apply with professional results; look for brands formulated for outdoor use for the most durable finish.

Take apart the furniture, if possible. Remove any upholstery, seat slings or cushions and set aside.

    • 2

Put on face mask and goggles and place the furniture onto a drop cloth or old newspapers.

    • 3

Remove old paint, if necessary, using a paint stripper applied with a clean rag. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for application and removal.

    • 4

Wipe furniture well with a tack cloth to remove any residual paint and dust.

    • 5

Spray the wood primer onto bamboo furniture and allow to dry, per the manufacturer’s directions.

    • 6

Shake the spray paint vigorously for several minutes, then apply to all areas of the furniture, using even strokes. Allow the paint to completely dry before reassembling and replacing seats and cushions.
