Painting Rattan Furniture for Outdoor Use

Rattan furniture often furnishes patios and decks with comfort and style. When your rattan pieces sit out in the elements for months on end, you may find that they need regular maintenance to stay attractive. Instructions

    • 1

Brush the surfaces of the rattan furniture thoroughly with the wire brush to remove flaking paint. Work carefully to place the wire bristles into every crevice to remove as much flaking paint as possible.

    • 2

Vacuum the furniture with the brush attachment to remove dust.

    • 3

Fill the bucket with warm water and add 2 tsp. of ammonia and a squirt of dish detergent. Mix the ingredients well. Dip the soft brush into the water and wash the rattan furniture well to remove dirt and dust. Use the toothbrush to remove stubborn dust from crevices. Allow the furniture to dry completely after washing it.

    • 4

Spread the drop cloth outdoors where you can spray the primer and paint. Place the furniture onto the drop cloth.

    • 5

Shake the spray primer thoroughly to mix the paint in the can. Hold the can about 16 inches away from the rattan and press the spray can nozzle to apply the paint. Move the can back and forth over the sides of the furniture first, applying just enough paint to avoid dripping.

    • 6

Continue shaking the primer can and applying primer to the furniture until you coat it evenly from all sides. Allow the primer to dry for about one hour.

    • 7

Repeat the same process to apply the spray latex paint to the rattan furniture. Allow the paint to dry for at least 24 hours before using it.
