Instructions

    • 1

Ask the lumber yard personnel to cut your boards lengthwise, creating a series of strips that measure 1 1/2 inches by 1 3/4 inches.

    • 2

Cut nine strips that measure 36 inches long. Cut two of those strips in half, creating four smaller strips measuring 18 inches long. Cut four strips that measure 4 inches long. Cut two strips that measure 24 inches long.

    • 3

Lay one longer strip on the ground with the 1 3/4 side facing up. Lay a second strip on top of it, matching the edges. Pound 8d nails through the top strip into the second strip, nailing the two strips together. Use five nails at even spots across the strip for a secure hold. These are the first two strips in the bench top.

    • 4

Lay one 4-inch piece on top of the right end of the second strip, creating a third layer. Nail this piece in place. Place one of the 18-inch pieces in place next, perpendicular to the strips. The strips are running horizontally and this piece will be vertical, with the end level with the top of the bench strips. This is the first leg on the bench. Nail the leg in place.

    • 5

Place one of the 24-inch strips next in the row, then another leg and finish off that row with a final 4-inch piece. Place multiple nails on each piece to keep them all secure, and butt all the wood pieces together tightly in this row. You will have about 1/2 inch overhanging on the left edge. Don't worry about this, you didn't miscalculate.

    • 6

Nail on three more 36-inch strips to create three more layers to the top of the bench. Create another layer consisting of leg pieces, then add the final two 36-inch strips.

    • 7

Saw off the two protruding pieces at the ends of the leg rows to create a smooth end to the bench.

    • 8

Sand all the bench surfaces with medium sandpaper, then finish it off with a fine sandpaper.
