What Is a Convection Grill?

Grilling outdoors is a popular way to eat your favorite foods. According to a study conducted by the Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association in 2009, 82 percent of households in the U.S. own and use a grill. There are two main types of grills: propane gas and charcoal. A convection grill is specially designed to distribute heat evenly inside of a gas or charcoal grill. Some electric grills also utilize convection technology, and offer a way to use convection with a portable unit.
  1. Convection

    • Convection is a term used to refer to a way in which there is heat transfer by mass motion of air. This means the air is moved away from the original source carrying energy and retaining heat. Essentially, warm air rises and as it turns, cool air downplays into the original heat source only to be re-filtered once again. Convection in terms of grilling utilizes a specially designed internal air flow system that keeps warm or hot air moving throughout the grill cooking area. This method of grilling is different from direct grilling because food cooks more evenly and faster than directly over an open flame.

    Use

    • A convection grill generally uses built-in fans or air vents in several areas of the grill to keep air circulating properly. Convection gas grills are often used as permanent or semi-permanent fixtures for the avid backyard barbecue enthusiast. Gas grills with a convection feature allow you to cook large food items outdoors with the convenience of gas. Roasts, leg of lamb, racks of ribs and whole chickens can all be cooked on a convection gas grill. If you are looking to add the taste of charcoal to your food, try a charcoal convection grill. Because charcoal can be unpredictable in terms of heat, a convection flow system will help your food cook evenly.

    Benefits

    • The main benefit of a convection grill is the even distribution of heat. When used properly, the grill should not burn foods. A convection grill is a way you can cook remotely and safely. Grills like the Bubba Keg offer a convection charcoal grill that you can use for tailgating and more. The Bubba Keg uses a specially designed damper and keg-shaped design to help distribute heat evenly. The Bubba has a hitch attachment so the entire grill is supported on your tailgate for ease of cooking and convenience. You can also transport most small gas convection grills to your favorite campsite or picnic location.

    Drawbacks

    • If you are planning on taking your convection grill on the road and will only be there for a short time, think again. Most portable convection units are designed to stay warm for a long period of time, depending on how hot the internal temperature gets. While most grills remain cool to the touch on the outside, the interior can remain hot. When cleaning, be careful with electric or battery-powered units that contain fans--they can become damaged if they get wet.
