How to Make an Expanding Net for a Hammock

One of the singular pleasures of summer is to while away an hour or two, swinging in a hammock. Hammocks come in a variety of styles, including the expanding net type. This collapsible version is made of a netting material that can be crushed into a small ball, and, when it expands, it can easily hold an adult or two small children. Crochet an expanding net hammock using only simple chain stitch and double crochet stitch. This project seems large but it works up quickly due to the stitching design.

Things You'll Need

  • Cotton string, 3 to 4 balls
  • Size J crochet hook
  • Measuring tape

Instructions

    • 1

Make a loop at the end of one strand of string. Insert a size J crochet hook. Chain stitch until the chain measures 48 inches long.

    • 2

Turn the work and double crochet in the fourth chain from the hook. Make double crochet stitches in each chain to the end of the row.

    • 3

Chain three, then turn the work. Double crochet in the second chain from the hook and in every stitch until the end of the row.

    • 4

Chain three, then turn the work. Double crochet in the second space from the hook, on top of the first double crochet stitch in the previous row. Chain one. Skip the next stitch, then double crochet in the next stitch in the row. Chain one again. Alternate making chain stitches and double crochet stitches until you reach the end of the row.

    • 5

Chain three, then turn the work. Make more rows like the previous one, alternating chain stitch and double crochet stitch. Continue making rows in this manner until the piece measures 6 feet long, or the desired length of your hammock.

Crochet two rows of solid double crochet with no chain stitching between the stitches. Cut the string 4 inches from the last stitch and pull it through to secure the crocheting. You now have a panel of crocheted netting with two solid crocheted ends.

Make 10 crocheted chains, each one 48 inches long. Attach one chain on each corner of the crocheted panel. Attach one chain in the center of each solid row. Attach one chain between the center and each corner on each end of the panel. You now have five chains attached to each end of the panel.

Gather all the chains together on one end of the panel. Tie the chains together at the end with an overhand knot. Do the same with all five chains at the other end of the panel.
