Hanging a Hammock with a Wood Post

Hammocks are designed for long hours spent reading, sleeping or just watching the clouds roll by. But a relaxing afternoon in a hammock can only come after you have installed the hammock properly. You can hang a hammock between a tree and a post, or between a post and some other sturdy object. If you plan to hang a hammock from a tree, make sure that the tree is between 12 and 16 inches in diameter.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a rot-resistant hardwood post that is at least 4 inches by 4 inches, or 4 inches in diameter. The post will need to be approximately 8 feet long. Good choices for hardwood include oak, cherry, birch, mahogany and hickory. The type of wood that will resist decay where you live will depend on your climate -- check with your local lumber supplier for the best woods for you. Select a solid post that doesn't have any cracks in it.

    • 2

Measure the hammock. The distance between the post and the other object you plan to hang the hammock from, such as a tree, should be equivalent to two-thirds of the length of the hammock.

    • 3

Dig a 2-foot-deep hole for the post, 2/3 of the length away from the other object the hammock will hang from.

    • 4

Combine pre-mixed cement with water in a mixing container, following the directions on the bag of cement. Place the post in the hole, and have a helper hold the post straight up and down. Fill in the area around the post with cement. Allow the cement to set for the recommended amount of time, following the manufacturer's directions.

Wrap a hammock-hanging strap around the post approximately 5 feet above the ground. Attach S-hooks to the ends of the strap, then attach the hammock to the S-hooks. Attach the other end of the hammock to a tree or other sturdy object, using the other hammock hanging strap.
