How to Hang a Curved Trellis

Curved or arched trellises add a graceful element to homes and their landscapes, while providing foundations for climbing plants. Trellises let you grow climbing plants in a variety of locations where you might otherwise not have the space. Consider the sunlight needs of your plant before choosing a location. Curved trellises add another dimension to climbing plants, allowing flowers to cascade from the graceful arch. Trellises are made of a variety of materials, ranging from wood and metals to vinyls and plastics. Vinyl and metal trellises tend to last longer than wooden ones and require very little upkeep. A curved trellis can be installed in less than a day with a few basic tools.

Instructions

  1. Wood Installation

    • 1

Place the trellis on the ground and touching the wall you want to mount it on. Mark the wall where the curve meets the straight support of the trellis on both of its sides. Also make a mark on the wall 1 foot up from the bottom of the trellis. These are your mounting points.

    • 2

Cut four 4-inch sections of the 2- by 2-inch lumber to create the mounts. Attach these pieces to the mounting points marked on the wall. Use two nails per mount to secure it to the wall.

    • 3

Set the trellis against the mounts attached to the wall, having a helper hold the trellis in while you drive nails through the trellis into the mounts. Use nails that are long enough to travel through the trellis and into the wooden mounts.

    Masonry Installation

    • 4

Place the trellis on the ground and leaning against the wall you want to mount it on. Mark the wall where the curve meets the straight support of the trellis on both of its sides. Also make a mark on the wall 1 foot up from the bottom of the trellis. These are your mounting points.

    • 5

Drill eight holes into the masonry wall at the marked locations, two holes at each marked area. These holes need to be vertically in line with each other, about 2 inches apart. Insert a wall plug into each of the holes.

    • 6

Cut four 4-inch sections of the 2- by 2-inch lumber to make the mounts. Attach these pieces to the wall where the wall plugs are. Use two screws per mount to secure them to the wall.

    • 7

Set the trellis into place against the wall mounts. Have a helper hold the trellis in place while you attach the trellis to the mounts with nails and a hammer, using at least 2 nails per mount. The nails need to be long enough to travel through the trellis and into the mounts without hitting the masonry behind the mounts.
