Types of Outdoor Flowers

Flowers appeal to people because of their wide range of colors and sweet smells. Flowers are used to symbolize love, gratitude, grief and joy. They are also used as ornaments to beautify homes and give life to special occasions. They even attract other interesting forms of life, such as insects and the birds that feed on them. Only seed-bearing plants are capable of producing flowers. The flower bears the seeds or pollen used in propagation.
  1. Sympetalous

    • Sympetalous flowers have petals that are either partially or fully joined together. Morning glories are an outdoor kind of sympetalous flower.

    Polypetalous

    • Polypetalous flowers have petals that are entirely separate from one another. Roses poppies and dandelions are all outdoor types of polypetalous flowers.

    Actinomorphic

    • Actinomorphic flowers have radial symmetry. This means that if you draw an imaginary line through the middle of the flower, no matter where the line runs, the two halves are mirror images of each other. Daisies are an outdoor example of actinomorphic flowers.

    Zygomorphic

    • Zygomorphic flowers appear have two symmetrical parts only from one point of view, with the flower upright and oriented properly. Lady slippers and tiger lilies are outdoor types of are zygomorphic flower.

    Annuals

    • Annual flowers blossom generously in spring. They have bright colors and can last throughout the season. They produce seeds during warm weather but start to wither away when it gets cold. Some annuals become perennials when they are planted in a constantly warm environment. Pansies and violets are outdoor annual flowers.

    Perennials

    • Perennial flowers bloom again and again, every year. These flowers are often preferentially planted by gardeners because they are very dependable bloomers. Perennial flowers may need extra nutrients and fertilizers to be added to their soil, as they are drawing nutrients out of it for such a long and continuous time. Peonies and black-eyed Susans are outdoor perennials.

    Flowering Bulbs

    • Flowering bulbs grow from tuberous roots, rhizomes and corms. They bloom either during summer or fall and sometimes do not survive the winter. They are relatively small flowers. Calla lilies, peacock orchids and dahlias are outdoor flowering bulbs.

    Biennials

    • Biennial flowers take two years to go through their entire growth cycle, from seed, to maturity, to flowering, to death. They tend to grow during the first year and bloom during the second year. Foxgloves, forget-me-nots and primroses are all outdoor biennials.
