Ornamental Tobacco Plants

Nicotiana is grown as a flowering annual and is a relative to the tobacco plant grown for smoking and chewing. An ornamental, nicotiana bears long trumpet shaped flowers attractive to hummingbirds and butterflies and some varieties have a sweet, strong scent that fills the night air. Older heirlooms are large plants, usually with white blooms, but newer hybrids are smaller and some are available in more colors. Nicotiana is a member of the nightshade family of tomatoes, peppers, potatoes and eggplants.

    • Tinkerbell nicotiana is a large plant, growing up to 4 feet tall with light rose, 3/4-inch flowers. This hybrid provides good disease resistance and would make a good addition to the back of the border due to its height. Tinkerbell will do well in most locations and thrives in full sun, partial sun and full shade.

    Perfume Deep Purple

    • The star-shaped trumpet flowers of nicotiana Perfume Deep Purple exude their fragrance after the sun goes down, attracting moths to pollinate their flowers. This flowering tobacco grows to 20 inches tall and was first introduced as a new cultivar in 2006, when it was named and All-American Selection. The plant is suitable for container planting and does not require deadheading to thrive.

    Domino Antique

    • Growing 10 to 14 inches tall, nicotiana Domino Antique is a good bedding plant for sun and part-sun garden beds. This annual hybrid has a deep rose, 1 1/4-inch flowers and blooms from June through September. Consider Domino Antique for edging and middle-of-the-border plantings.
