Jasmine Flower Colors

Jasmine is a flowering shrub with over 200 varieties that bloom at different times of the year. Its flowers can appear as solitary blossoms or bloom in clusters and are usually white, off-white, yellow, or pink. Although jasmine is commonly associated with tropical climates, some hardy varieties tolerate cold weather.
  1. Common Jasmine

    • Also known as poet's jasmine or Jasminum officinale, common jasmine is a shrub that grows 2 to 4 feet tall. Although native to Iran, it now grows in many warmer, drier climates. Its flowers have long and fragrant white petals, and their scent is commonly reproduced in perfumes.

    Winter Jasmine

    • Winter jasmine, or Jasminum nudiflorum, is native to China. As its name suggests, this variety can handle cold weather and is hardy in the United States as far north as Pennsylvania. It produces unscented solitary flowers that are usually bright yellow but can even verge on light orange. Because of its fibrous root system, winter jasmine is often planted on hillsides to control soil erosion.

    Italian Jasmine

    • Italian jasmine, or Jasminum humile, has bright yellow flowers that are very fragrant and bloom in clusters. Also known as Indian yellow jasmine, Italian jasmine can grow up to 20 feet tall and will need regular pruning in a garden.

    Shrubby Jasmine

    • Known botanically as Jasminum fruticans, shrubby jasmine is native to southern Europe and much of the Mediterranean region. It grows well on dry banks and produces numerous small yellow flowers.

    Other Jasmine Varieties

    • Also known as Asiatic jasmine and sacred jasmine, Arabian jasmine (Jasminum sambac) produces clusters of small white flowers that can be used in making jasmine tea. Vine-like primrose jasmine has small unscented flowers that can be yellow, as in the Chinese variety, or white, as in the 'Downy' cultivar. Star jasmine, as its name suggests, has long narrow petals that vary in hue from white to light pink. Star jasmine is sometimes also called angel-wing jasmine, shining jasmine, or Confederate jasmine.
