Shade-Loving Evergreens

Fill your yard with year-round color and interest with evergreens, as these plants remain green throughout the seasons. If you have a shady yard, several species of evergreen thrive in the shade.
  1. Rhododendron

    • The leaves of the rhododendron remain green all year long. In the spring, these plants produce clusters of brightly colored flowers in hues of pink, purple, red and white. They prefer partial shade, but can tolerate more shade if given the right amount of water.

    Holly

    • The evergreen leaves of the holly are dark green, leathery and have ragged, pointy edges. In the winter, the plant produces red berries. It does well in light shade and is drought tolerant.

    Canadian Hemlock

    • This needled evergreen has medium- to dark-green foliage with white-and-blue bands appearing under each needle. It also produces brown cones. The plant grows in a conical shape and does best when planted in full shade.
