Are Artificial Flowers Always Tacky?

Synthetic flowers are often seen as classless and inappropriate, but some varieties of these "blooms" can be an elegant and colorful decorative addition. Whether you're decorating for a special occasion like a wedding or bridal shower or are looking for new centerpieces for the dining room, artificial flowers may do the trick.
  1. Size

    • If the artificial flowers are unrealistically large, they may come across as tacky unless you're giving them as a humorous gift accessory. For instance, a large plastic or cloth daisy makes great gift box decor if you're presenting a gift to a little girl. Smaller synthetic flowers, however, can be added to real, larger flowers for a centerpiece that is both attractive and affordable. For example, if you're displaying large real red roses in your flower arrangement, synthetic baby's breath or foliage can be used again even after you change the main flowers out.

    Types

    • The types of materials used for artificial flowers can contribute to whether or not the flowers look tacky. Flowers made from cheap cloth collect dust very easily, making them look dull and unattractive, and the same is often true for plastic accent flowers. Artificial flowers made of silk are usually the most elegant choice, especially if you're decorating for an upscale occasion like a wedding.

    Considerations

    • Artificial flower petals can also serve as great nontacky decoration, and you won't have to worry about the petals wilting. Cloth or silk petals can be sprinkled on the tables at a wedding reception and can even be added as a filler to gift bags to make a presentation more appealing to the eye.
