How to Make a DYI Arched Trellis

An arched trellis will add an elegant vertical structure to any garden. The trellis can also be placed at the beginning of a walkway, as a symbol of welcome. Planting climbing rose bushes near the trellis will add additional charm. Other flowering vines, including morning glory, wisteria or grape vines would also enhance the beauty of the arched trellis. Using tree branches or small saplings as construction elements is economical and contributes to a natural appearance.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the area for the four arched trellis support branches, which will be 3-feet apart widthwise and 3-feet apart lengthwise.

    • 2

Dig 6-inch deep holes at the support sites with the shovel. Insert the support branches and pack the dirt around the branches tightly.

    • 3

Attach the 4-foot long top archway branches to the supports with the steel wire, bending the branches to create a curved arch and wrapping the wire around the branch connections securely.

    • 4

Cover the exposed wire connections with 6-inch lengths of jute rope, wrapped and tied around the connection spots.

    • 5

Attach 12 2-foot long branches down each side of the trellis in a criss-cross fashion attaching the ends of the shorter branches to the support branches with the wire and covering the wire with the jute.
