How to Hang Outdoor Silk Plants

Silk plants are a simple, maintenance-free solution to a home in need of some sprucing up. Whereas living plants must be watered and will not produce flowers year-round in most of the country's growing zones, silk plants always appear fresh and vibrant. By hanging a few baskets of silk plants outside the entryway to your home, you can give your house a colorful and welcoming appearance, even during bleak winter months.

  1. How to Arrange an Outdoor Silk Plant Hanging Basket

    • 1

Look for a hanging plant basket that suits your space and fill it up to an inch from the edge of the basket with floral foam. Cut the foam so that it fits securely within the base of the basket.

    • 2

Apply a thin layer of hot glue, using a glue gun, to the base of the floral foam to secure it to the base of the hanging basket.

    • 3

Arrange the silk plants you have selected from tallest to shortest on a nearby counter. Beginning with the tallest plants, stick each silk flower into the floral foam. Place the tallest pieces into the center of the foam and work outward toward the edges. Moving in concentric circles, make each row of plants or flowers slightly shorter than the last by pushing their stems about half an inch further into the floral foam. Use wire cutters when necessary to shorten stems in crisp lines.

    • 4

Place silk foliage around the flowers on the edge of the basket with a few pieces intermingled in between the concentric circles until you have an arrangement you are satisfied with. Repeat this process until all of your hanging baskets are ready to hang outdoors.

Look for spots in front or in back of your house where you would like to add color and vibrancy. Locate areas with wood overhangs where you can screw large ceiling hooks into and hang potted plants from. Mark these spots with a thick pencil.

    • 6

Insert the pointed end of a large ceiling hook into each marked spot. Placing a thumb and forefinger around the hook, screw the large ceiling hook into the each marked spot until the round base of the hook is flush with the wood overhang you are screwing it into. Lightly tap each ceiling hook with a hammer to ensure it is completely inserted into the wood. Tug on the hook slightly before hanging your plant on it.

    • 7

Find the apex of the wire or hook on your hanging basket and hang it on the hook in your wood overhang. Repeat this process until all silk plant baskets are hung outside your home. Move baskets, change displays and even replace them with fresh flowers in season as desired without having to remove or reinstall hooks.
