When to Transplant Lilac Shrubs

The eye-catching blooms of lilac shrubs can add dramatic flair to the home garden. If you decide to purchase lilac shrubs, you need to consider the best time to transplant them.
  1. Description

    • Lilac shrubs are characterized by their bright purple color and strong scent that seems to usher in the spring. In addition, lilacs are very hardy and thus are widespread in areas that have harsh winters.

    Timing

    • Lilacs should be planted in early spring. Lilacs bought in containers should be planted in early spring or early fall. This way, the lilac will have sufficient time to establish a strong root system before winter sets in.

    Additional Considerations

    • Spacing is important when transplanting lilac shrubs. Depending on the cultivar, these lilac shrubs can reach over 10 feet in width. Thus, larger cultivars should be planted at least 12 to 15 feet apart. Moreover, while lilacs are extremely adaptable, they do best in areas where soil is high in organic matter, there is good water drainage and partial to full sun.
