Mexican Marigold Plant

If you're looking for a fragrant addition to your backyard garden, the Mexican marigold (Tagetes spp.) is an appropriate choice. This plant is attractive, easy to care for, and can be used for a number of purposes.
  1. Size

    • The Mexican marigold can be considered a large plant, and can grow to be about 6 feet tall and up to 8 feet wide, although some plants can reach 10 feet in width. Mexican marigold is a shrubby plant, which makes it an ideal back-of-the-border plant for a small or mid-sized garden.

    Geography

    • Mexican marigold, of course, is native to Mexico, but also grows well in many parts of North America. The plant needs warm conditions in order to thrive, and can tolerate dry soil well, so parts of California or Arizona make prime locations for Mexican marigold growth; in subtropical climates, the Mexican marigold is a perennial plant.

    Benefits

    • Mexican marigold has also been used as an ancient health remedy for centuries. Aside from giving off a tarragon-like scent, Mexican marigold can be ground into a powder and taken internally to treat colic or the common cold. The aromatic herb has varieties that smell like tarragon, mint or lemon.
