    • Lilac bushes are known for their strong fragrance, which begins to fill the air in early May. Lilac bushes have purple, pink and white flowers. Before planting a lilac bush, consider the fact that mature lilac bushes can reach 12 feet in height and 8 feet in width.

    Types

    • Lilac is a genus of several species. These species include hyacinth lilac, Chinese lilac, Persian lilac, common lilac, Preston lilac, dwarf Korean lilac, and Japanese tree lilac.

    Geography

    • Northern Florida lies within U.S. Department of Agriculture Plant Hardiness Map zone 9 and southern Florida lies within USDA plant hardiness zone 10. Cutleaf lilac and Syringa patula -- also known as Miss Kim and Manchurian lilac -- can grow in zone 9.
