How to Make a Flower Box Lined With Thick Plastic

Homemade flower boxes are often made of wood, as it is a strong and sturdy material that will survive rain, wind and sunlight. Since wood can absorb water from the soil and plants, plastic sheets are often placed inside the flower box to prevent the wood from absorbing the water and to prevent any water from draining or leaking out the sides of the box. To create your own flower box with a thick plastic lining, simply use basic plywood, woodworking tools and a large piece of thick plastic bag.

  • Measuring tape
  • 1/2-inch-thick plywood sheet
  • Pencil
  • Jigsaw
  • Sandpaper

Instructions

    • 1

Use the pencil, measuring tape and ruler to draw the pieces needed for the flower box on the plywood board. Draw two pieces measuring 6 inches by 30 inches, two pieces measuring 6 inches by 12 inches, and one piece measuring 13 inches by 30 inches.

Use the jigsaw to cut the five pieces. Slide the sandpaper over the edges of the freshly cut pieces to remove splinters.

    • 3

Take the 6-by-30-inch pieces and place them across from one another. Take the two 6-by-12 inch pieces and place them opposite from one another, but perpendicular to the first two pieces. Create a box of the four pieces, so the 6-by-12 pieces fit between the 6-by-30 pieces. Attach the pieces to one another by hammering nails into the 30-inch-long pieces, so the nails extend into the 12-inch-long pieces. Use the level to ensure that the frame is evenly constructed.

Place the 13-inch-by-30-inch piece on top of the frame to create the bottom of the flower box. Attach the piece by hammering nails into the perimeter of the bottom piece, so the nails extend into and attach to the wooden flower box frame.

Apply the liquid glue to the corners and edges of the inside of the flower box. When done, apply the thick plastic sheet to the inside of the flower box and press down where the glue has been applied. Let the glue dry before putting soil and flowers into the flower box.
