List of Flowering Vines

Flowering vines are ideal for planting around a pergola, arbor or trellis. They can turn an unattractive wall or fence into a thing of beauty, or transform a ho-hum garden into a romantic retreat. There are several varieties of flowering vines that produce different shaped and colored flowers. When selecting a vine, consider where you'll plant it, as some can spread rapidly and grow to great heights.
  1. Clematis

    • A clematis bloom.

There are approximately 250 species of this flowering hardy perennial vine. The majority of species are deciduous, though some are evergreen. Different species of clematis produce different types of blooms, including small white flowers that grow in panicles or spreading clusters, bell-shaped and flat flowers. Several colors of blooms are available, including red, pink, purple and white. In addition to the blooms, the vines also produce dark green foliage. The vine is able to climb and support itself on objects because the stalks of the leaves wrap themselves around the object the plant is climbing. In order for the plant to climb, it should be planted near a support thin, wire-like support, as the leaf stalks can't wrap around thick objects. Clematis does best when it is planted in full sun or partial shade and requires moist soil that drains well.

    Honeysuckle

    • Honeysuckle has trumpet-shaped flowers.

The blooms of the honeysuckle vine are not only attractive, but they also emit a fragrant odor. Some varieties of this perennial vine are deciduous and some are evergreen. All varieties produce dark green foliage and trumpet-shaped flowers that range in color from yellow to white to even orange and red. This vine grows rapidly and will quickly take over the location it is planted. They do best when planted in full sun, though they will tolerate partial shade, and require a fair amount of watering. They are ideal for planting anywhere you would desire a climbing vine -- near a fence, on a trellis, over an arbor or on a wall.

    Jasmine

    • A cluster of jasmine blooms.

Jasmine is a flowering vine, of which there are several species; most of which produce very aromatic blooms. The vines have shiny, dark green foliage and bloom clusters of small, star-shaped yellow or white flowers. Some varieties are evergreen, while others are deciduous; all, however, are perennial. Jasmine grows to an average height of 15 feet, though some can reach as tall as 20 feet. It will attach itself to any structure it is planted near -- a fence, a trellis or even a tree. Full sun or partial shade is the best lighting for successfully growing a jasmine vine and soil conditions should be moist, yet well draining.
