How to Keep Dirt in a Borderless Flower Bed

Borderless flower beds offer a unique, soft and natural appearance that lacks the hard edges of rocks, pavers or other hard-scape techniques. However, borderless flower beds also lack a defined beginning or end, which can cause concern when mowing or weeding the area and keeping dirt and mulch inside the border. As a result, creating a natural border using raised flower beds defines a stop point when mowing, helps protect the bed from weeds and keeps dirt inside the invisible border.

Instructions

    • 1

Carefully dig up the flower bulbs during dormancy or carefully remove the flowers for later replanting. Place the bulbs or flowers in a prepared pot and set them aside.

    • 2

Pile a mix of soil and compost appropriate for the flower type on top of the bed. Mix the soil and compost and add fertilizer. Allow the mixture to rest for at least 24 hours.

    • 3

Dig holes in the mixture and replace the bulbs or flowers. Cover the flowers with soil and water and allow them to rest.

    • 4

Dig an edge around the bed using a flat spade. The edge should be at least 1 inch deep and conform to the shape of the bed. Make sure the edge is sharp and remove any grass and weed roots from the area, which keeps the edging clean.

    • 5

Place mulch on top of the bed to protect the flowers from heat and cold. The mulch should stop at the edging and you can easily remove any spill over. Once mulching is complete, the lawn should have a clean and natural appearance.
