Low Growth Flower Bed Plants

Cover the ground in your flower bed with low-growing plants. These plants stay close the ground, adding color and interest with their attractive foliage and flowers. There are several types of low-growing plants available for this purpose.
  1. Creeping Phlox

    • Creeping phlox is an attractive semi-evergreen ground cover. This mound-growing plant produces spiky green foliage and in the spring, it is awash with purple, blue or white flowers. The tiny flowers are star-shaped and cover the entire plant. Creeping phlox spreads up to 1 foot and does best when planted in partial shade and in moist, well drained soil.

    Pachysandra

    • Pachysandra is ideal for use as a ground cover in a shady flower bed and is planted for its evergreen foliage. During the spring, the leaves have a purple coloring, in the summer, they turn bright green and then turn yellowish-green in fall and winter. Occasionally, small white flowers appear. The plant grows about 1 foot high. It requires nutrient-rich, well-drained soil.

    Creeping Juniper

    • Another low-growing, evergreen plant, the foliage of creeping juniper adds texture to a flower bed. The leaves resemble needles and range in color from green to bluish-green. During the winter season, the foliage may turn purple or slate in color. Growing 1 to 2 feet tall, this plant is an attractive addition to a sunny flower bed. It can adapt to dry conditions, yet prefers moist soil.
