Plant rhododendrons in spring or in early fall in well-drained soil, partial sun and with plenty of water and protection from wind. Rhododendrons flower in the spring.
In colder climates, rhododendrons should be transplanted in early spring. In warm climates, they should be transplanted from late summer to late fall. Rhododendrons should be planted as soon as possible after being removed from the ground. If the plant is in its soft growth stage, it should not be transplanted at all until it has developed more.
Plant rhododendrons in soil rich with organic material. It may be difficult to transplant older plants whose roots have grown deep and intertwined with those of other plants.
