Front Yard Flower Bed Ideas

Add color and texture to your front yard with a flower bed. When choosing plants for this space, take into consideration the type of soil and light the area receives, as well the USDA planting zone in which you live, as many plants require specific conditions to thrive.
  1. Ornamental Grasses

    • Ornamental grasses help to add whimsy to a flower bed, as they flow with the blowing wind and make an attractive display. Plant them toward the back of the bed, as they can grow rather tall and you don't want them to obstruct the view of lower growing plants.

    Perennial Flowers

    • Perennials are ideal for a flower bed, as they are low maintenance and provide color year after year. Choose perennials that have different bloom times so that there is a succession of color in your flower bed. Tulips and irises are colorful spring bloomers, day lilies and purple cone flower provide color throughout the summer, while mums and sedum "Autumn Joy" brighten up the fall.

    Annual Flowers

    • Fill in the borders or any other gaps in your flower bed with annuals. These flowers provide vibrant pops of color and offer diversity for your flower bed; since they need to be replanted yearly, your garden will have a different look. Options to consider include impatiens, pansies, petunias and gerbera daisies.
