Draw a plan for the heart-shaped flower bed on grid paper using colored pencils. Estimate the size of the bed by assigning a set number of inches per grid square.
Choose the type of plants to use for the heart-shaped garden. The flowering plants can be white, red or pink. Use a second flower color to plant around the outline of the flower bed to emphasize the inner color.
Refer to the grid plan to determine the width and length of the heart-shaped flower bed. The true length is measured from the topmost curve of one side to the pointed tip at the bottom center of the heart.
Place a garden hose, flower bed edging length or clothesline rope on the ground where the heart-shaped flower bed will be constructed. Measure and place boards or lengths of rope to form a large square that is as long and wide as the length and width planned for the heart.
Form a large heart shape with the hose, edging or rope on the soil within the square. Adjust the shape until it is even and level at each end of the heart, aligning the two curves at the top and the pointed tip at the bottom.
Cut the lawn sod with a half-moon edging tool. Remove the sod in pieces. Prepare the soil and plant the flowers within the outline and interior of the heart shape.
