How to Care for Blaze Roses

Blaze roses are climbing roses, which can climb to heights of up to 10 feet. The rose plant produces strong, light green foliage and blooms with large clusters of deep-red roses throughout the summer months. While Blaze roses grow well without much fuss, a little care can help you get the best results out of your Blaze climbing rose.

Instructions

    • 1

Provide proper support for your Blaze roses. Either plant the roses near a structure that they can naturally cling to and climb, such as a fence or garden arch, or install a source of support. If the Blaze roses are planted next to your house, for instance, add a trellis to the side of your house for your roses to climb.

    • 2

Give your Blaze roses access to adequate sunlight. Though the plants thrives in full sun, they do tolerate some shade. Either morning or afternoon sun is generally enough to support Blaze rose growth and health.

    • 3

Water the Blaze rose once per week so that the soil is moist but no water is left standing. Cover the soil around the base of the plant with mulch to keep moisture in.

    • 4

Use a rose-specific fertilizer at the base of the plant to provide nutrients during the growing season. Fertilizing the rose plant at the start of the summer growing season and once monthly after that is a good basic schedule, though you should always follow the directions on the fertilizer package.

    • 5

Prune only the dead or poorly performing wood from a Blaze rose, but don't prune at all for the first two years. Allow the plant to climb up the support device you've provided without training to get the most natural, full coverage from the foliage. After the first two years, trim back any long stems that are not blooming well to roughly 4 inches in length, to encourage them to grow and produce buds.
