Cover beds with landscape fabric before planting to smother weeds before their seeds can germinate. Controlling weeds greatly reduces gardening chores. Mulch may assist in this effort and is aesthetically pleasing.
Plant seeds and bedding plants close together to crowd out weeds. Allow enough room for growth. Stagger plantings and plant varieties for the season for continued new growth. Add flowers and herbs that attract beneficial insects.
Add native and drought-resistant plants that do not require additional water after establishment. Avoid garden specimens that attract insects or require excessive pruning.
Create a simple design with masses of heights and color. Discard unhealthy or stressed seedlings, as these can attract diseases that may affect the entire flowerbed.
