Dogs and flowers are both wonderful additions to a yard, but dogs can do so much damage through digging and trampling that flowers are impossible to grow. However, dogs can be deterred from digging through proper training and barriers. Chicken wire can be used over a flower bed to stop dogs from digging. The plants will grow through the wire and the wire can't be seen under the soil, but the dogs won't like the feel of it on their feet. A fence is also a good way to keep dogs out of flower beds. It can stop dogs from entering the bed or you can use it to train your dog to stay out.

1
Prepare your flower garden as you usually do by digging up the soil and adding compost.
-
2
Lay chicken wire over the entire flower bed. Hold the wire in place by placing large rocks around the border.

3
Plant flower seeds in the garden as usual and cover with a layer of dirt that is 1 to 2 inches deep.

4
Build a fence around the garden. Even if the fence is only 1 to 2 feet high, it can provide a visual deterrent or stop small dogs. The most effective fences are at least 6 feet high and are solid at the bottom so the dog can't squeeze under.
