How to Make a Two-level Fieldstone Flower Bed

A tiered, two-level garden bed can be a landscaping feature in your yard. Planted with an array of flowers, it will brighten up even the most austere yard. Natural fieldstone creates borders that blend in to the surroundings and anchor it to the ground. An added bonus is that the soil in raised beds warms up sooner in spring and the stones to use may already be in your yard.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay out the shape of your garden bed. Spray paint the border directly on the ground to mark the edges.

    • 2

Remove all vegetation contained within the garden bed by digging it out with a shovel or by rototilling.

    • 3

Create the border by laying a single course of fieldstone directly on the ground, following the spray-painted guideline.

    • 4

Dry-stack two or three more layers of fieldstone on top of the bottom layer, creating a small border wall about 8 inches high. Use larger rocks for the bottom layer, digging in irregularly shaped rocks. Fit layers together like a jigsaw puzzle, making sure solid rock spans any gaps in the layer below.

    • 5

Place concrete blocks in the interior of the bed as the foundation for the wall of fieldstones which will form the second level of the bed.

    • 6

Dry stack fieldstones on top of the concrete blocks, forming a wall with approximately the same number of courses as the perimeter wall.

    • 7

Fill the center, taller opening with garden soil, up to the top of the fieldstone. This will be the second level of the garden bed.

    • 8

Add soil to the area between the two walls, which will be the lower level of the garden bed. Completely cover the concrete blocks, as they are only there to support the decorative fieldstone.

    • 9

Plant the garden bed with the plants of your choice. Fill the upper level first, so you don't walk on plants on the lower level while planting.
