What Kind of Flowers to Plant in the Sunny Area?

As with all plants, there are flowers that grow better in the shade and others that need sun to thrive. If your yard or garden is primarily in the sun, you will need to choose flowers that flourish in the sun, instead of wilting in the heat of the day. There is a wide range of plants to choose from when it comes to planting flowers in the sun.
  1. Sunflowers

    • Sunflowers did not get their name only because they look like big balls of sun. They love the sun. In fact, you will notice that when sunflowers get tall and are in full bloom, that their faces actually follow the sun throughout the day. Sow sunflower seeds directly into the ground after the soil has warmed. Cover them with a screen or light-colored gardening fabric, as the birds and small animals will dig them up and eat them. Space the plants about 1 foot apart. Different varieties of sunflowers require planting at different times of the year. Read the package to be positive of the planting time for your sunflowers.

    Shasta Daisy

    • The Shasta daisy is white flower with a yellow center. These are sun-loving flowers that can also handle a lack of water. This makes them an ideal flower to plant if you live in particularly dry area or are not great about making sure your plants are properly watered. You can sow Shasta daisy seeds directly into the soil after all danger of frost has passed or if you want to spread the plants out in your yard, you can start the seeds indoors about six weeks before planting them outside.

    Butterfly Weed

    • Butterfly weed is a flower that grows well in most areas and in the full sun. This, and the fact that it attracts butterflies, makes it a favorite of flower gardeners. This is a bright orange flower that will bloom on and off from spring through fall. It grows more like a bush so it gives you several blooms per plant as opposed to other flowers. Your plant may not bloom the first year as it is absorbing nutrients from the soil, but as long as it has enough sun, it should bloom the second year and all the years after.

    Marigolds

    • Marigolds are attractive flowers to put in pots or along the edges of your garden. These sun-loving flowers will bloom all summer as long as you pull off and remove the spent flowers. Marigolds will even last into the fall. Interplanting marigolds with vegetables is even said to keep certain pests away. You can either start your seeds indoors or sow the seeds directly into the soil after all danger of frost.
