Which Flowers Can I Plant in the Summer?

If you are an avid gardener, plant flowers for continuous blooming throughout the growing season. To accomplish this, plant different flowers at various times of the year. While you may think of planting seeds or transplants only in the spring or fall, flowers are available to plant during the summer months as well.
  1. Colchium

    • Colchicum is a fall-blooming flower to plant in the middle of summer. These grow from bulbs. Prepare the soil so that it's loose and well fertilized. Place the bulb in the soil with the root hairs pointing downward. Loosely cover the bulb with about ¼ inch of soil, and water well.

    Forget-Me-Nots

    • Forget-me-nots are biennial flowers grown from seeds. Biennial means that these flowers bloom every other year. Forget-me-nots are some of the easiest of summer flowers to grow from seeds. They germinate quickly and produce a lot of small flowers blue in color. At the beginning of the summer, plant these seeds directly into the ground.

    Daffodils

    • While you may think of daffodils as spring-blooming flowers, consider planting the bulbs the summer before. Late summer is an ideal planting time, or whenever you see the bulbs available in your local stores. Prepare a loose, nutrient-rich soil and plant your bulbs with the root ends pointing downward. Cover loosely with soil and water. Also consider covering the bulbs with straw or hay to give them a little added protection from harsh winter weather, especially if you live in an area that gets a lot of snow.

    Petunias

    • Petunias are common flowers seen in many gardens throughout the summer. Petunias are good to grow in pots, hanging baskets and along the borders of your gardens. These are colorful flowers that come in many different shades of pink, purple, blue and white. Two-tone petunias are also available. Start petunias from seed indoors about six weeks before planting outside. Buy flats of petunia seedlings, most of which are already blooming. Plant the flowers in the morning or late in the evening. Water well and keep the soil around them moist throughout the summer when in bloom.
