How to Keep Burgundy Chinese Fringe Flowers Healthy

The Burgundy cultivar of the Chinese fringe flower, or Loropetalum chinense, isn't actually burgundy at all. Its petals are shocking pink and it originates in China and southeast Asia. Its vivid and full blossoms can add a dash of color and texture to any garden. Some of these plants stay shrublike at 6 feet tall, whereas others can grow to be as full and tall as trees at 10 feet tall. The fringe flower is not a fussy plant, and proper basic care will keep it flowering robustly and healthily.

Instructions

    • 1

Plant the flower or place the pot in a sunny or somewhat shady area in well-drained soil. Separate fringe plants by 3 to 5 feet. Add 4 inches of mulch around the stems of each plant.

    • 2

Water the plant regularly so that you maintain a moist soil texture. Each day, dip the first knuckle of your finger into the soil next to the stem and if the soil feels slightly dry, then give the plant 1/4 cup to 1/2 cup water.

    • 3

Spread a light sprinkling of an all-purpose fertilizer on the soil around the plant's stem before the plant grows new flowers in the spring.
