Types of Flowers for a Gazebo

A gazebo is a decorative traditional wood, vinyl or metal structure that is used for outdoor seating and protection from the sun. The homeowner can utilize the beauty and resilience of native plantings to highlight a gazebo with long-lasting flower displays. Perennial and annual flowering plants add fragrance and color to the shaped, roof covered outbuilding. Plants are also hung in open areas to fill the small building with living flowers.
  1. Bushes and Climbers

    • The vibrant color and aromatic scents of roses, spirea, rhododendron, azalea, sweet pea vine and honeysuckle swirl around a gazebo. Climbing flowering vines such as clematis, wisteria, bougainvillea, morning glory and trumpet vine are attractive when trained to twine around the posts of the decorative outbuilding. Night blooming jasmine adds a romantic touch in the moonlight. Bushes and vines are planted around the perimeter of the structure or in flower beds in the immediate area. The owner must maintain the climbing plants to prevent damage to roofing, side panels and screens.

    Perennials

    • The ambiance of a country cottage garden, tropical escape or Victorian respite is carried forward with perennial plants set in around the gazebo. Delphinium, hollyhock, peony, foxglove, phlox, native tropicals and lilies grow and flourish in the local garden soil. Smaller plants such as the cheerful pansy will follow up after flowering tulip and daffodil spring bulbs reach their peak. The addition of perennials gives a yearly display of flowering plants in the gazebo area. The beauty of the plantings is the fact that a gardener can continuously build up the perennial flower beds over a period of years as budget allows.

    Annuals

    • Flower beds filled with nursery or home-grown annual plants form an enhancing border around the gazebo and walkway leading to it. The colorful flowers fill empty spaces and bloom when the perennials and bushes are just budding out or have gone by. Petunias, allyssum, begonias, geranium, lobelia and marigolds are a few of the multi-blossom plantings that are commonly set into borders, flower beds, window boxes and containers that decorate a gazebo setting. A new gazebo area is planted with annuals to create the flowery scene the first year before the perennials are mature and established.

    Hanging Planters

    • Large hanging pots of fuchsia, ivy geranium, begonia, petunia and vining flowers are hung from the rafters of a gazebo, creating a stunning display that helps create the ambiance for a romantic outbuilding. Colors are used to create specific moods for weddings, family reunions and birthday celebrations in the landscaping of the gazebo. For instance, red geraniums combined with blue lobelia and white petunias creates a patriotic feel in a gazebo for a Fourth of July gathering.
