Mexican heather is a low growing tropical plant that thrives in the full sun. Although it is native to Mexico, it will grow in the warmer climates of the United States as well. It will grow from 12 to 18 inches tall. One of the perks of growing Mexican heather is that it will bloom all year long. It is an evergreen with purple, pink or white blossoms. If you do not live in an area that is fairly warm all year round, you can bring a potted Mexican heather indoors as long as it can sit in a sunny position for eight hours a day.
Geraniums are a common houseplant that can also be planted outside. Geraniums need plenty of sunshine, from six to eight hours per day. Growing petunias where they can get every bit of sun possible will produce the most flowers. Some varieties trail quite a bit, making petunias a good choice for use as ground cover plants as well.
Zinnias grow well both when started from seeds sown directly into the garden soil or if transplants are purchased. Zinnias are native to the Americas and require full sun. Zinnias love the hot weather but be sure to water them on a regular basis so that the soil does not dry out completely. Mulching around the flowers is helpful in sustaining moisture most efficiently. Choose from a wide variety of colors of zinnias. Mix and match the colors to brighten up your garden.
