How to Change the Colors of a Rhododendron

There are over 800 different species rhododendrons, ranging from a few inches tall to trees over 100 feet tall. Most commonly, rhododendrons are flowering shrubs whose blooms can be white, yellow, pink, red and purple. You can change the colors of the flowers using a bit of food coloring. Placing the flowers in a vase, they will soak up the colored water and take on the set color. The process works best with white rhododendrons.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a vase with a few inches of water. If you plan on using multiple colors, you will need one vase for each color.

    • 2

Add a few drops of food coloring to each vase (one color in each vase). The darker the water, the darker and more prominent the changed coloring of the rhododendrons will be.

    • 3

Snip a small portion (half inch) of the stems off the rhododendrons at an angle.

    • 4

Place the flowers in the vases. Allow the flowers to sit untouched for 24 to 48 hours. During this time, the flowers will soak up the dyed water, changing the coloration of their petals.

    • 5

Remove the flowers from the dyed water. Clean out the vases and add fresh water, replace the rhododendrons in the vases. Optionally add plant food to the vases to extend the life of your newly color changed flowers.
