How Tall Does Bee Balm Grow?

Growth

• Like any member of the mint family (Lamiaceae), bee balm can be invasive if not properly controlled. It spreads quickly by creeping rhizomes. These native North American wildflowers grow in clumps that are easy to move when they begin to take over. Divide and remove excess plants every two to three years. Another method to control spreading is to plant bee balm in a bucket with the bottom removed.

Size

• Bee balm usually grows 3 feet tall. Different varieties, however, can range from 2 to 4 feet. The plant grows tallest in rich, moist soil and full sun. Bee balm does not tolerate drought. Petite Delight, a smaller version of bee balm, grows only 12 to 15 inches tall. At the other extreme, wild bergamot can reach 5 feet tall.

Care

• Hardy in U.S. Department of Agriculture zones 3 to 9, bee balm is easy to grow and requires little care. It is traditionally grown in herb gardens and has edible flowers. The leaves can be dried to make tea. Flowers bloom in early summer and will continue to bloom if regularly deadheaded. Tall bee balm may require staking with supports to hold it erect. Cut back in late winter to early spring.

Diseases

• Bee balm does not tolerate high humidity. Plant it in a site with good air circulation or it may fall victim to powdery mildew. While powdery mildew will not kill the plant, it leaves unsightly blotches on leaves. Use mildew-resistant varieties, such as Jacob Cline, Raspberry Wine or Violet Queen.
