How to Plant Flowers in Boxes

Planting flowers in boxes can decorate the front of your home. Place these boxes around the yard or attach them to the window sills of the house. Boxes come in all shapes and sizes, giving your outdoor decorating a variety of choices. If you are going to use boxes for planting flowers there are a few things that you need to keep in mind, such as whether or not you should treat the boxes to keep them from leaking or how to attach them to the house or porch railings. Choose annual flowers over perennials.

Instructions

    • 1

Treat the wood of the boxes using mineral oil. Rub the oil into the wood until it will no longer absorb any more. The oil protects the wood somewhat from water damage.

    • 2

Purchase plastic inserts for the boxes, especially when hanging them on the house at the window sills. Use the plastic inserts to keep water from leaking out of the boxes and running down the walls of the house. Do this in conjunction with the mineral oil or by itself.

    • 3

Attach any clips that you can use to hold the boxes to the window sills or the porch railings.

    • 4

Fill the boxes with potting soil so that they are 2/3 of the way full. Plant transplants of flowers in the boxes. Leave enough room between the individual plants to allow for more growth.

    • 5

Stagger the flowers between the front and the back of the box. Plant more than one flower variety in each box for a more attractive look.

    • 6

Add a little more soil to the box if necessary to completely cover the roots of the flowers.

    • 7

Plant the flowers in small pots in the same manner if you want to use pots instead of planting directly into the box.

    • 8

Place the box wherever you want to leave it, whether on the patio, hanging on a railing or at the window sills. Make sure the box is in a sunny location.

    • 9

Water the flowers now so that the box is not too heavy to move.

    • 10

Check the soil in the boxes every day or two to make sure that the soil has not completely dried out. Water the flowers with at least 1 inch of water per week, especially during hot and dry times.
