How to Grow the Plant Vine Argyreia Nervosa

Argyreia nervosa, or Hawaiian Baby Woodrose, is a climbing vine that grows as a perennial plant in tropical climates or as an annual plant in colder areas. This plant grows as a compact bush for the first two years before sending out extremely long vines. Hawaiian Baby Woodrose can grow from seed, although this requires the gardener to nick the seed as an aid to germination.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a planting site for Argyreia nervosa in full sun. This plant cannot tolerate temperatures below 40 degrees Fahrenheit, meaning you can only grow Argyreia nervosa outside in US Department of Agriculture hardiness zones 11 and higher. Growing this plant in a container is impractical due to its massive size.

    • 2

Prepare the soil for planting Hawaiian Baby Woodrose, ensuring that it has good drainage. This plant tolerates a range of soil types, but grows especially well in rich soil. Loosen the soil to a depth of several inches with a garden trowel if the soil is mostly clay.

    • 3

Nick the seeds with a sharp pair of scissors. The cut should be just below the seed eye and should barely penetrate the seed coat. Place the seeds in hot water and allow them to soak overnight.

    • 4

Plant the seeds in the prepared site in the spring once the temperature stays above 60 F. The eye of the seed should be facing up and just below the soil surface. Water the seeds frequently to keep them moist but not wet. The mature plants tolerate short periods of drought.

    • 5

Apply a diluted multi-purpose fertilizer every one to two months during the growing season. Prune Argyreia nervosa to keep it within the desired growing area. This plant grows quickly under ideal circumstances and recovers easily from heavy pruning.
