How to Prune Flowers on a Bush

Although you might expect that you need to prune the flowers on a bush, it is actually the bush itself that requires the pruning. Cutting away dead branches as well as some areas of new growth promotes healthy and abundant flowers. Overgrowth prevents new flowers from growing by reducing the amount of light available to the flowers.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove branches that are crossing each other and rubbing. Select the weakest of the two branches, usually the oldest, and cut it at a node at a 45-degree angle.

    • 2

Remove older branches from the bush by cutting them as close to a node as possible, using clean pruning shears. Old branches do not produce flowers as vigorously as young ones; removing old branches renews the plant.

    • 3

Thin out 1/3 of all the oldest branches if the shrub is overgrown.
