How to Make Dried Lavender Bouquets

A beautiful flowering member of the mint family, lavender may be grown in the home garden or in a container indoor to use for its distinctive scent or for culinary use. No matter the reason, once lavender has bloomed, it must be harvested and dried -- popularly in decorative bunches called bouquets -- so that it can be used all year long. If you wish to use your lavender bouquets for decorative use, you should use one of the hardier varieties, such as Royal Velvet or Hidcote Giant, which do not drop their blooms when dried.

Instructions

    • 1

Clip lavender from your plants using sharp gardening shears, cutting a few inches down into the green stem but above the wooden bottom portion.

    • 2

Section your lavender blossoms into handful-sized bunches.

    • 3

Secure each bunch, or bouquet, with a rubber band.

    • 4

Bend paper clips into hooks, one per bouquet.

    • 5

Catch each bouquet by the rubber band with the paper clip hook. This will allow you to hang it so it can dry completely.

    • 6

Hang each bouquet by the hook, upside down -- blossoms facing down -- inside a cool, dark place, such as a closet.

    • 7

Allow the lavender bouquets to dry for approximately a week, or until they are completely dry.

    • 8

Tie decorative ribbon at the base of each bunch, covering the rubber band, and display.
